STUDENT LIFE

Student Budgeting Made Simple (and How Study Hub Partner Discounts Work)

By Janidu Sandaruwan · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

University life is expensive in small ways: a tea here, a short ride there, a printout before every lab. None of it feels like much on its own, but together it decides whether the month ends comfortably or not. Here is a simple way to stay in control, plus how to use the student discounts on Study Hub.

1. A five-minute weekly budget

Monthly budgets are hard to keep because the month feels long. A weekly budget is easier: take the money you have for the month, subtract fixed costs (boarding, transport passes, phone), and divide what is left by four. That number is your spending limit for the week.

  1. Write down your fixed costs once a month.
  2. Divide the rest into four weekly amounts.
  3. Each Sunday, write down roughly what you spent and whether you stayed under the limit.
  4. Anything left over goes into savings, not into next week's spending.

Tip: keep a small "emergency" amount you never touch for day-to-day spending. Surprise costs, like a lost charger or an extra lab fee, always come.

2. Where student money really goes

For most students, three things take the biggest share after fixed costs: food and drinks during the day, transport and small purchases like stationery, printing and data top-ups. Food is usually the biggest and the easiest to change, because it is a daily decision.

3. Practical ways to spend less

4. How Study Hub partner discounts work

Study Hub partners with local cafés, shops and services that want to support students. Each partner offers a discount that you can claim with a one-time code. Some offers are open to every student, and some are extra perks for Premium members. You can browse all partners, their locations and their offers on the Partners page.

The code system protects both students and partners: each code works once and only for a short time, so codes can't be shared around or screenshot and reused.

5. Claiming a discount, step by step

  1. Sign in to Study Hub and open the Partners page.
  2. Choose the partner and read the offer and its conditions.
  3. Wait until you are at the counter, ready to pay, then tap to get your code. A code is valid for 10 minutes only.
  4. Show the code to the cashier. They scan it and enter your bill, and the discount is applied.

Don't open the code early. If it expires before you pay, you'll need to come back to the page and get a new one.

Own a business near campus? Partners reach thousands of university students by offering a student discount. You can contact Study Hub through the Partners page to join.
